Pastoral and ecclesiological contributions of Leonidas Proaño in the Diocese of Riobamba: Reception of Vatican II, 1964-1984
Main Article Content
Abstract
Leonidas Proaño with his pastoral and ecclesiological contributions during the second half of the 20th century achieved the reception of the Second Vatican Council in the Diocese of Riobamba (province of Chimborazo), Ecuador through a new ecclesial conscience and a change of mentality. After two decades, Proaño, in his pastoral work, succeeded in linking the most pressing social issues concerning the indigenous population and the popular sectors with a new type of humanistic and social approach, in some aspects inspired by existential thought, the social doctrine of the Church and the practice of Liberation Theology (TL from now on). The pastoral and ecclesiological contributions were the result of a break with the traditionalist Catholic universe, among them are the Casa Hogar Santa Cruz, pastoral de conjunto and the Small Christian Communities. As much as they were accepted by some sectors of the population, others rejected them, creating conflicts outside and inside the Church. By reviewing primary and secondary sources, the article reconstructs part of Leonidas Proaño's pastoral work and presents a historical vision of his social and ecclesial trajectory.
